Welcome To I Security Security Steps, Update It! This section is about the importance to update all software on your computer.

What is updating?

Updating is the term we use for getting the latest versions of your software. Updating is a very important aspect of owning a computer and without doing so you are potentially at risk or could have errors on your computer.

What do I need to update?

You need to update nearly everything. You need to update your antivirus, firewall, antispam, antispyware, operating system, browser and about every other piece of software on your computer. You don’t have to update all software for security reasons, thats why we haven’t mentioned everything here. To see what you need to update and when look below:

Why Update?

You have to update certain software for certain reasons. We’ve put the type of software and why update it below. You will find it very useful if you sign up for the newsletters of the companies that make your software. You will then be informed about the latest updates. Go to Latest Threats and scroll down to latest vulnerabilities to see the latest vulnerabilities in popular software.

Operating System: Updates are often issued monthly for Operating Systems, because security weaknesses are often discovered that could, if not fixed, bring terrible effects. Patches are issued to fix these problems so scan for updates monthly at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com . (Sorry, we do not offer information about updating for systems not running Microsoft Windows).

Antivirus Software: Antivirus definitions need to be updated weekly to be able to detect the latest viruses. Sometimes the scanner is also updated so that the Antivirus program can scan for the latest virus techniques.

Firewall Software: You should check for firewall updates monthly so that the latest hacker techniques are recognised and that you have the latest features available

Browser: Updates are often issued monthly when vulnerabilities are discovered in popular browsers. Most vulnerabilities are found in Microsoft’s Internet Explorer so we advise users of Internet Explorer (or people that even have Internet Explorer installed) to visit the Windows Update site monthly to check for updates. If you don’t use Internet Explorer, we suggest you check our Latest Threats page monthly to see if any vulnerabilities have been found in your browser.

Antispyware: Definitions are often updated fortnightly for popular Antispyware programs so that the latest forms of spyware can be detected

Antispam Software: If you use professional Antispam software updates will often be issued monthly to pick up the latest Spamming Techniques and newly discovered addresses and servers where spam arrives from.

Without the updates listed above your computer could be an easy target for hackers, let through viruses, spyware and spam (even though you scan). Your computer also be vulnerable to attacks due to security holes in software. A lot of other software needs updating, but the ones listed above are the most critical.
